BRIEF REVIEW OF RECEPTORS IN HUMAN BODY

RECEPTORS IN MAN:

Receptors are the sensory organs which receive a stimulus. Following are the main receptor organs in man:

  • Organ of sight.
  • Organ of hearing.
  • Organ of smell.
  • Organ of taste.
  • Organ of touch.

Sight:

The eyes are the most marvelous of the sense organs as they make us aware of various objects around us, nearby and far away. When we see a tree we don’t have to touch it or climb its branches in order to know what it is like. With normal vision we can reach out as far as our eyes can see and are thus becoming aware of events and circumstances around us. These eyes are the great bliss of Almighty Allah.

Ears:

The ears are the most amazing and spectacular organs in our body. These are one of the best endowed by Allah. The ears lend a hand us to hear everything we want. There are frequency ranges, but human ear can only hear in the frequency range between 20Hz to 20,000Hz. This is called audible frequency.

Smell:

The organ of smell lies in the nasal cavity above mouth. It is also called the olfactory organ and its sensitive cells are supplied by the branches or the olfactory nerve from the brain. The incoming air currents carry the smell particles of substances into the nasal cavity which arouse the sensitive cells in the organ of smell. The olfactory nerve carries the sensation to the brain, which determines the nature of a substance emitting the smell.

Touch:

There are encapsulated nerve endings in the skin, which respond to slight pressure on the skin. The skin responds to heat and cold also. Experiments have shown that the spot in the that respond to cold don’t respond to heat and vice versa. It is also known that any stimulus that affects the free and exposed nerve endings produce the sensation of pain. Some sensory receptors are placed deeper in the tissues and are not stimulated unless the tissues above are firmly compressed.

Taste:

It is generally believed that the entire tongue is the organ of taste, but it is not so. The tiny organs of taste are located on the surface of the tongue. These are called the taste buds. They are spherical in shape and microscopic in size. A taste bud consists of a group of cells that are supplied with nerve endings from the nerve that penetrates the inner part of the mouth cavity. There are four kinds of taste buds, each kind specified to seek a particular taste, i.e. sweet, salty, sour and bitter. Those for salty taste are situated along with those for bitter taste on the side of the tongue and for sweet taste at the tip of the tongue.

What is the typical look of southern Europe

Is there actually a typical look?

In my previous post(s) I described some typical traits of people from the Germanic countries. These Germanic countries are all in mid-north Europe and share some typical things. First, they all have a high percentage of blondes. Second, the most common eye colour is blue, green or grey. Germanic countries are for example The Netherlands, Sweden, Iceland and Germany.

Of course, not everyone looks like a typical person. These Germanic countries also have a lot of people with brown hair. Also black and red hair are no rarity.

Hair colour map of Europe

The southern parts of Europe

When we travel to the south well see different people. France, Spain, Portugal and Italy all have different looking people. The most obvious difference is hair colour, followed by eye colour. People from southern parts of Europe are more likely to have brown or black hair. Also, they tend to have more darker eyes (brown in different shades).

What do French look like?

People from France are called French. France is a very large country and internationally very famous for a lot of different things. The capital city is Paris, also known as the city of love. It is actually hard to describe the typical look of a French person because the country is extremely large (in comparison with other European countries). French from the norhtern parts of France are ususally lighter (more blond, lighter eyes).

Hair: (light)brown
Eyes: > 50% brown (<50% light)
Height: average
Most similarities with: depends on region

Gaspard Ulliel: French actor

What do Spaniards look like?

People from Spain are called Spaniards. Spain is also quite a large country all the way in the south of Europe. Its capital city is Madrid. Spanish people have brown eyes and dark coloured hair. Of course, not all Spaniards are typical. There are also Spanish people with blue eyes and blond hair, though less common. In some areas (east coast), light eyes are very rare.

Hair: (dark)brown / black
Eyes: > brown
Height: average
Most similarities with: Portugal

Fernando Alonso: Spanish Formula 1 racer

What do Portuguese look like?

When we go to Spains neighbouring country, we see Portugal. People from this coutry are called Portuguese and they tend to look a lot like the Spaniards. This is of course no surprise since both countries are neighbours and share a lot of common things. There are differences between Portugal and Spain on some specific domains (political, cultural), but when it comes to the physical looks there are hardly any real differences.

Hair: (dark)brown / black
Eyes: > brown
Height: average
Most similarities with: Spain

Paulo Ferreira: Portuguese football player

What do Italians look like?

Italians are from Italy. This large country is also part of the European latin world. People from Italy speak Italian and the capital city is Rome. The typical look of an Italian is actually very hard to describe since this country is extremely long. People from the north of Italy look very different than those from the southern parts. People from the north are lighter and have lighter eyes, though brown is still most common.

ASHTAVINAYAK TOUR

Pali : Shri Ballaleshwar

Ballaleshvar In the Sudhagad taluka of Raigad district, near the village Nagothane, Shri Ballaleshwar is situated in the Village Pali at a distance of 111 kms from Pune. Regular bus services are available from Mumbai and Pune.

Among the Astavinayaka, Ballal Vinayak at Pali is associated with a legend where Ganapati is said to have come to the aid of a young lad, who was a fervent devotee of Ganapati and is famous by his devotees name. This place is very famous and spiritually awakened.

The legend

In Krita Yuga, there was a staunch child devotee of Ganapati called Ballal living in village Pali of country Sindhu. He was the son of a businessman called Kalyan and his wife Indumati. From childhood, Ballal was highly addicted to worshipping Shri Ganesh. Along with other children, he used to worship with small stones being treated as Gods. Once, the children went outside the village and saw a big stone. At the instance of Ballal, the children treated the stone as Ganapati and started worshipping. All of them got so engrossed that they forgot about hunger and thirst or about day or night. Their parents were waiting for the children at home. When the children did not return on time, they all went to Kalyans house and complained about Ballal as he was the leader of all the children. Kalyan seth become furious. He took a stick and went out. He saw children listening Ganesh purana outside the village. With anger gone into his head, he broke the small temples build by the children and started chasing them. Ballals companion fled away, but Ballal was caught by his father as he was submerged in meditation. He was beaten till blood started flowing from his body. His father tied him to a tree, then smashed all pooja materials collected by the children and threw away the big stone which children had treated as Ganapati. "Let me see which God protects you now", said the father and he returned home. Ballal started entreating Vinayaka. He was not concerned about his being beaten up or being tied to the tree. But he became furious seeing the temple smashed and idols thrown away. Though he was affected by pain, hunger and thirst, he kept on chanting the name of Gajanana till he fainted. Lord Ganapati was moved by the childs devotion and He appeared in the form of a Brahmin before Ballal and touched him. Immediately, thirst and hunger vanished, wounds were healed and Ballal felt a new vigour moving in his body. He prostrated before the Brahmin whom he recognised as Gajanan and worshipped him. Ganapati told him to ask for a boon. Ballal said "Let me have unshaken devotion towards you. You must stay at this place and remove the miseries of the people who come to you". Ganesh said :"I shall ever remain here in my part form; I will take your name before mine and be called as Ballal Vinayak". Then, he embraced Ballal and vanished into a nearby stone. That stone statue is called Ballaleshwar. The stone idol which Kalyan Vaishya threw away is also called as Dhundi Vinayak. This is a swayambhu Mûrti. He is worshipped before Ballaleshwar is worshipped.

The murti

The image of Vinayak is sitting on a stone throne, facing east; its trunk is left turned. Diamonds are embedded in the eyes and navel. The background is made of silver where one finds Riddhi and Siddhi waving chamaras. Among Ashtavinayaka, Ballaleshwar is the only Vinayak who is famous by his devotees name and who is dressed up as Brahmin.

The temple

Original wooden temple was renovated and a new stone temple was built in 1760 A.D. Temple complex is tiled and it encircles two lakes. Shape of the stone temple is in the form of letter "shri" facing east. During Dakshinayan, at sun rise, the sun rays falls exactly on the Vinayaka. There are two sanctums. People believe that temple walls are made quite strong by mixing lead with cement.

OUR TRAVEL TRIPS VELLORE TEMPLE

OUR VISIT TO MAHALAKSHMI GOLDEN TEMPLE, VELLORE

On Wednesday, 20th September 08 Mrs and MR AVK arrived in chennai. We decided to visit Vellore golden temple the next day.

As per plan we left on 21st September early morning. We had taken with ourselves some water and snacks.

On the way at Poonamallee in the HIGHWAY restaurant, which is situated at the junction where one has to divert for Tirupati and Bangalore roads, we stopped for break fast and to refresh ourselves. We then proceeded via bangalore highway through Sriperumpudur, the place where Rajiv Gandhi was assasinated, and reached vellore. It was a very plesant drive It is toll paid road in the Chennai- Bangalore highway forming part of golden quadrilateral. We reached the temple gate around 12-30 pm. The temple is situated in a place called SRIPURAM. After entering vellore from highway we have to cross vellore hospital to the other side. Everyone knows this famous temple and guide us through as it is a tourist centre attraction.

There were two queues- one general and one special seva. We took the special seva darshan @ Rs.250/- per head. The seva darshan allows one to go nearer to the deity. Then we were to enter the queue from a different gate being seva ticket holders.

It is a spectacularly built temple. If one sees from above it looks like a star. Every devotee has to enter from one of tips of the star and go through or walk through every wing before reaching the center. The walk way was well built with shade and cool breeze. On the way there are stalls for water and also inscriptions about the temple and reasons for the star formation and its effects. The explanation is that if one goes through the wings and reaches the centre one gets energy. The total distance one would have covered or walked by the time one reaches the centre of the temple is around 3 kms.

In the centre of the temple, seva ticket holders are again sent through a special way to reach the sanctum quickly. We have to walk around the sanctum building before reaching the deity. The sanctum is surrounded by water. The main gopuram and sanctum building is covered fully with GOLDEN SHEETS. All other walls from the gate to the centre are pained with golden yellow color. So from a distance it looks like total golden temple

After entering the sanctum we were allowed to sit in front of the goddess for about 15 minutes. On that day the goddesses mahalakshmi was decked with all costly stones and covered with gold from head to foot. It was breath taking. After a few minutes, AARTI was shown and we were asked to proceed as next batch of people were there for the darshan. On the way back we were given special prasadams.

We walked back through the final wing of the star to the outgate. We were also given ANNA PRASADAM which was a tasty rasam sadaam of different type in thonnai.

On coming our we strolled in the shopping centre briefly and started our journey back. We decided to have our lunch at SARAVANA Bhavan hotel at vellore. IT was around 3-20 pm. The snacks and water taken with us helped us see through till that time which we had enroute.

On the way back we stopped in between for small refreshment and reached chennai aroung 7-30 pm through heavy traffic. Had light dinner at our home at T nagar and Mrs and MR AVK left for K K NAGAR for taking rest.

IT was a nice and wonderful experience. Next day we planned a trip to THENNAGOOR temple

How to Make a Rabbit Trap

A good serviceable rabbit trap can be made by sinking a common dry goods box in the ground to within 6 in. of its top. A hole 6 or 7 in. square is cut in each end level with the earths surface and boxes 18 in. long that will just fit are set in, hung on pivots, with the longest end outside, so they will lie horizontal. A rabbit may now look through the two tubes, says the American Thresherman.

Rabbit in the Trap

The bait is hung on a string from the top of the large box so that it may be seen and smelled from the outside. The rabbit naturally goes into the holes and in this trap there is nothing to awaken his suspicion.
He smells the bait, squeezes along past the center of the tube, when it tilts down and the game is shot into the pit, the tube righting itself at once for another catch.
The top and sides of the large box may be covered with leaves, snow or anything to hide it. A door placed in the top will enable the trapper to take out the animals.
By placing a little hay or other food in the bottom of the box the trap need not be visited oftener than once a week.
